Once installed and configured, viewing the directory url resulted in the error

attempt to invoke directory as script: /var/www/awstats/

I’m not going to repeat the installation and configuration process here since there is plenty of information out there. Instead, I’ll point out two links that were most helpful (especially the latter which includes a workaround for the issue above):

If I need to contact a support technician or product representative, I’ll click the damn button that should be clearly offered, off to the side and out of the way.

It’s not unlike the salespeople that pester you in a department store. I will approach you if I want your help, so be approachable and available, but leave me alone until I’m ready.
